Lateritic nickel ore deposits

Nickel laterites are a very important type of nickel ore deposit. They are growing to become the most important source of nickel metal for world demand (currently second to sulfide nickel ore deposits ). Nickel laterites are generally mined via open cut mining methods. Nickel is extracted from the ore by a variety of process routes.

A New Process for Cobalt Nickel Separation

A New Process for Co-Ni Separation – ALTA 2010 2 ABSTRACT A new process has been developed jointly by CSIRO and CESL, for separating cobalt from nickel in an impure leach solution. The process uses synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) with commercially available reagents, but in a novel and efficient manner using kinetic factors.

Operations – Eagle Mine

The property was sold to Callahan Mining Company who began milling gold from the Ropes Gold Mine in 1985. Callahan used the pit to dispose of tailings underwater until operations ceased in the early 1990''s. The last company to use the Mill was Mineral Processing Corporation, and for over a decade, the Mill sat idle, falling to disrepair.

Global trends and environmental issues in nickel mining ...

 · Nickel is commonly present in two principal ore types—sulfide or laterite. Sulfide ores are typically derived from volcanic or hydrothermal processes and usually include copper (Cu) and/or cobalt (Co), and often precious metals such as gold (Au) or platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh) (the platinum group metals or PGMs) (Naldrett, 2002, Hoatson et al., 2006).

Sherritt Gordon Process. The nickel and cobalt metallurgy processes begin with an initial treatment of the mineral, re-concentrating it through crushing and flotation/gravity and obtaining a "speiss", rich in cobalt and nickel. The process begins by adding the sulfide-associated mineral to a reactor with sulfuric acid and pressurised air.

Nickel mine

From 1953 to 1958 Nickel Rim mines operating around Sudbury, Ontario deposited their mine tailings in an impoundment near the mine. The water in the impoundment was later tested and found to have low pH and high concentrations of iron, sulphur and dissolved metals such as aluminum and nickel. This is due to the oxidation of the tailings (usually sulfide minerals like pyrrhotite).

Processing Nickel Ores

The nickel settles and the solution is pumped out to a holding tank. Since the solution still contains some nickel, it is re-processed again to recover the remaining nickel. The nickel can then be removed through a cone bottomed tank or by a thickener/filter operation to yield the nickel powder.
